Forrest Gump appeared to me as the epitome of Taoism. So simplistic was his personality and lifestyle that, despite his low IQ, he was possibly the most successful man I have ever seen, even if he is just a fictional character. With an IQ of 75, he made it through college and graduated with a degree. What the degree was is unknown to me, but I thought of it as quite a significant feat. He joined the army and was discharged after the four required years. He fought in Vietnam and became a war hero. He even earned the Congressional Medal of Honor. He became an excellent ping-pong player and even played it in some significant international challenge, becoming the best in the world. He met three different presidents due to his excellence in football (he took part on the All-American team), his awarding of the Congressional Medal of Honor, and his ping-pong championship.
By keeping a promise to his Vietnam buddy, even though he died, Gump bought a shrimping boat with his ping-pong wins and went out shrimping with his Lieutenant as his first mate. They caught maybe five shrimp a day. Then a huge hurricane came in and destroyed the whole shrimping market, with the exception of Gump's boat. They reeled in the money from then on, pun intended. Gump eventually became the owner of a very successful shrimping company that consisted of ten or more boats.
One day Gump just felt like running. He ran to the end of his road, and then to the end of his town, and then to the end of his county, and even to the end of the State of Alabama. He just kept running. He ran from coast to coast four times before deciding he was tired. He became a national icon and a source of hope for many people.
Forrest Gump was a very successful man because of his simplicity. What made me so intrigued in his character was the child-like love he showed to everyone, especially to those who were close to him. He accepted everyone for who they were (He picked up a notebook that a black girl dropped as she became the first black person to attend the University of Alabama. Everyone around despised the idea and protested. Gump knew no difference.) Throughout life, the girl of his dreams kept leaving him. He loved her just the same, anyway. Her child, one day, would be his. He cared for her so much. Before her death, they would one day marry. This love was also shown for his mother.
This movie was beautiful. I want to develop a more simplistic lifestyle like Forrest Gump's. He may not have been a very smart man, but he does know what love is and he feels it everyday.
Stay classy, fellow bloggers.
About My Project
The Mission:
Complete 101 preset tasks in a period of 1001 days.
The Criteria:
Tasks must be specific (ie. no ambiguity in the wording) with a result that is either measurable or clearly defined. Tasks must also be realistic and stretching (ie. represent some amount of work on your part).
Why 1001 Days?
Many people have created lists in the past - frequently simple goals such as new year's resolutions. The key to beating procrastination is to set a deadline that is realistic. 1001 Days (about 2.75 years) is a better period of time than a year, because it allows you several seasons to complete the tasks, which is better for organising and timing some tasks such as overseas trips or outdoor activities.
Website Info:
This website is simple to navigate around. To view my 101 Goals list, click here. When I complete a task in full or in part (such as visiting one state instead of 50 as a whole), I will make a new post. The posts can be viewed by clicking on the task/book/movie/state. I will describe in detail how and when the task was completed as well as throw in some comments about its difficulty or lack thereof.
